There are few wild animals that are subject to as much wanton cruelty as the raccoon. They are hunted with dogs, trapped with agonizing leghold traps, poisoned, gassed, drowned, beaten to death for merely being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Most states have no limits on how many can be trapped or hunted, or what time of year. Killing contests are common, with children as young as seven years old winning prizes for the most number killed, the biggest raccoon killed, and the smallest raccoon killed. Baby raccoons are stolen from dens in order to be used to train hunting dogs in a process known as "blooding the pups". Over a million raccoons are killed every year for sport, and that does not count the raccoons killed by nuisance wildlife control operators and individual homeowners.
